Terraso Joins Inquiring Systems, Inc.

By Derek Caelin

On July 1, 2026, the Terraso™ project joined Inquiring Systems, Inc. as our new fiscal sponsor. Fiscal sponsorship is a way to gain access to various payroll, insurance, benefits, and other back-office services that would otherwise be challenging for a small nonprofit project. In selecting ISI, Terraso joins a collective of projects dedicated to building a regenerative world through systemic action.

What does this mean for people who use Terraso Story Maps and LandPKS Apps? On a day to day basis, nothing has changed. The Terraso team remains the same. We continue to be responsible for developing our software, providing support, and stewarding data. ISI provides fiscal and legal oversight, but plays no role in our product decision-making or strategy, and has no access to user data. The difference is mostly legal: as the fiscal sponsor, ISI assumes legal responsibility for our project; it holds the copyright to our code and is the accountable actor in our updated privacy policy and terms of service

We are very grateful to Tech Matters, and particularly to Jim Fruchterman, for fostering our project and giving us an opportunity to launch and grow two products, LandPKS and Terraso Story Maps. Jim will continue to support Terraso as a member of our advisory board. Looking forward, we will continue to pursue our vision of a more sustainable world through open source technology under the stewardship of ISI.
